Observing PTSD Awareness Month

Observing PTSD Awareness Month

Greater Boston Addiction Centers during the month of June is part of a nationwide endeavor to raise awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, with the 27th of the month being highlighted as PTSD awareness day. PTSD affects 9 million people in the United States, a large number of people who desperately need treatment for PTSD. PTSD is usually associated with combat veterans, but this disorder can certainly develop in anyone who has witnessed or experienced a traumatic event, ranging from a natural disaster to sexual assault. In recent years, there is a highly effective rate of successfully treated individuals who have benefited from some form of trauma or PTSD treatment. At Greater Boston Addiction Centers or GBAC, we are happy to provide personalized care through our cognitive-behavioral therapy programs to those who wish to seek help with PTSD treatment. To find out more about the drug treatment programs we offer at GBAC, call us at 877.920.6583 or read more on our website.

PTSD and Addiction

PTSD has such intense symptoms that individuals will seek ways to self-medicate to relieve the painful symptoms they are experiencing. Without digging deeper and addressing the core of the issue, drugs or alcohol will only worsen the mental and physical health of the individual who has PTSD. At GBAC, we offer dual diagnosis treatment to address both the PTSD and substance abuse problems that commonly co-occur. Without proper treatment for both issues at hand, the chance of continued relapse is inevitable. With 9 million people affected by this disorder, PTSD awareness month and PTSD awareness day are important for educating and sharing information about this disorder so that anyone affected may seek the help they desperately deserve. Some other signs and symptoms of PTSD are listed below:

  • Physical pains such as migraines
  • Hypertension blood pressure
  • Flashbacks to the traumatic event
  • Realistic night terrors
  • Intrusive thoughts or imagery
  • Extreme alertness or hypervigilance
  • Irritability and aggressiveness
  • Substance abuse problems with drugs or alcohol
  • Feelings of extreme discomfort that can result in panic attacks

If you or a loved one is experiencing any or all of these symptoms associated with PTSD, call now to get help and guidance from one of our trusted GBAC staff members at 877.920.6583.
